The Silver Donkey (2004) Sonya Hartnett (Author) Anne Spudvilas (Illustrator)
Award Winner
The Silver Donkey is an affectionately told fable about two young French girls who happen upon a wounded British soldier during World War I. Realizing that the Lieutenant is blinded and hungry, youngsters Coco and Marcelle enlist the help of their older brother Pascal. The children, fascinated by the soldier, bring him food and water and after realizing that he should not be found, dub him their secret soldier. The Lieutenant repays the children's kindness by showing them his lucky silver charm, a small and beautiful donkey. As his blindness recedes, he tells them four tales about the donkey; the story of Mary's ride to Bethlehem; an Indian myth; a wartime rescue effort; and a story about a family close to the soldier, each containing a message of fortitude, honesty, and courage.
